Recipe: We’re Going Gourmet On National Trail Mix Day!

With a name like Savory Addictions Gourmet Nuts, you can guarantee that owner Craig Jones would come up with a killer recipe to celebrate National Trail Mix Day.

Jones—a well-known food enthusiast here in the metro—whipped up a tasty, gourmet version for you to try out at your next party, campout or tailgate. “Here’s a twist on the classic trail mix, celebrating both the Kansas City Chiefs and a local favorite product,” says Jones.

Ingredients
1 cup seasoned nuts (or use Savory Addictions smoked nuts for an even better combo)
½ cup dried golden raisins
1 (1.69 ounce) package of red candy-coated milk chocolate

Seasoned Nuts Recipe:
Ingredients
½ cup brown sugar
½ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ to ¼ teaspoon cayenne
¼ teaspoon five-spice powder (optional)
2 tablespoons water
2 cups mixed roasted nuts

Instructions
Combine all ingredients except the nuts in a skillet and cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is bubbling. (About one to two minutes.)

Add the nuts and cook for an additional three minutes, stirring to coat the nuts in the glaze. Remove from the heat and spread the nuts out on parchment paper to let them cool completely.

Directions
Mix the nuts, raisins, and chocolate in a bowl. Store in an airtight container.

Chef notes:
– Using smoked nuts adds another layer of flavor and depth.
– While trail mix can get needlessly complicated, a few ingredients in the right proportions results in a good bite every time.
– Fruit and candy can be substituted in a variety of colors to cheer on your favorite team. (Red M&M’s, anyone?)
