An Annual Event Supports Kansas Citians with Vision Loss

The spirit of Kansas City philanthropy continues next month with Boots & Pearls, an annual event from Alphapointe to support and empower people with vision loss.

The rich history of Alphapointe begins over 100 years ago when Catherine Hale became frustrated with the lack of employment and training opportunities for her brother who was blind. Her brother joined the Workers for the Blind of Greater Kansas City in 1911, and by 1916 Hale helped the group incorporate as the Kansas City Association for the Blind—later renamed Alphapointe Association for the Blind. The nonprofit has worked to provide employment and comprehensive rehabilitation services for people with vision loss ever since, becoming one of the nation’s largest employers of people who are blind.

Boots & Pearls: Wine & Whiskey is a party, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a chance to explore Kansas City’s distilling and brewing history through custom-built exhibits, sample cocktails from J. Rieger, and take a ride on the 40-foot indoor distillery slide. All proceeds from the event go towards Alphapointe’s mission of helping thousands of people with visual impairments every year.

The event will be held at J. Rieger & Co. on February 23. Alphapointe.org
