Popculture Gourmet Popcorn: 60 Different Flavors—and Counting!


How tasty is Popculture Gourmet Popcorn? They’ve shipped to 49 different states and counting, says co-owner Justin Woo. (We’re looking at you, Alaska!) Originally launched in 2017 in Parkville, the team recently decided to venture out to Overland Park—where business has been popping. Clearly, popcorn remains a comfort-food staple which has seen a resurgence during the pandemic.


We asked Woo why popcorn is a classic favorite for both big and little kids.

First and foremost, why is popcorn so popular?
“As a chef, popcorn is a perfect item. Good texture and a blank canvas ready for any flavor profile. We really enjoy exploring different spice combinations and flavoring techniques to make popcorn taste like something else—while maintaining that texture and general greatness that is popcorn.  We are always brainstorming new flavors. (We typically announce new items on social media.)”


How many different varieties do you have—and, more importantly, what’s your fave?
“The Popculture menu has over 60 flavors of gourmet popcorn, including vegan and gluten-free options. I really don’t have a favorite; it changes all the time. Lately, I’ve been really enjoying sriracha.”

Do customers come in with requests?
“All the time! It’s comforting to know that a lot of the flavors they’d like to see are already on the list of things we are working on. Our staff is great in that regard too. They’re always giving us ideas on new flavors to try or items they think our guests would enjoy.”


Any weird combos you’d suggest?
“We can custom mix any flavors you want. If you’re a first-time visitor to Popculture, I suggest coming in and speaking with us and get mini bags of flavors you think would be great. Take them home and mix and match. It’s always fun talking with regulars and hearing what new flavor combinations they really like.”


We see you’re teaming up with a few businesses.
“Some of the best clients we have are from our partnership line of products. We really like working with other businesses and developing flavors around what they do—like Spanish Gardens Taco Tuesday Popcorn or Buffalo State Pizza Popcorn. We’re really proud to be the official popcorn of the Kansas City Mavericks. Currently we have one flavor on their menu—with two more flavors set to come out.

Our dream client? All the other sports teams in Kansas City—Sporting, Royals, and Chiefs. They all have such unique and passionate fan bases. I think developing flavors for them would be something special. These are challenging times for a lot of local businesses. We just really appreciate the support.”
