Mary Barnes knows the name of the game is making a good first impression. It’s no wonder her irreverent (and occasionally inappropriate) custom-made doormats and door hangers have become the talk of the town. Barnes says her company, Door Designs By Mary, started out of desire to use her hands to make things. “I didn’t want to send behind a computer on my butt anymore,” she says.
While her door hangers are the most popular of her wares, she’s definitely a fan of her cheeky doormats. “I love the doormats because you can say whatever the heck you want,” she says. “The smile it brings to people when they read them makes me so happy.”
Her door hangers, meanwhile, are all handcrafted. “Making door hangers is an amazing creative outlet for me,” she says. “From cutting the wood rounds myself, painting and design, the florals and bows—I just love it all.”
