Impulse Purchase of the Week – 10/18

The perfect accoutrement to the perfect mani/pedi is picking out just the right color. But did you know that nail polish you choose is often filled with a mind-boggling array of harsh additives? Well, the team at Hoopla has created their own local brand of nail polish that’s oh-so user friendly. “We wanted nail polish that did not have toxic chemicals—one that was also long lasting and beautiful,” says co-owner Megan Thornberry. “We also wanted something that was vegan, certified by PETA as cruelty-free, and made in the U. S. So we set out to have that polish made—and we did.”

It took a while to perfect the polish through trial and error, but now Hoopla’s signature line is all the rage. “Feedback has been amazing. Typically, customers are surprised at how long-lasting our product is—despite not having any chemicals in it like most brands,” says co-owner Molly Maxwell. “It took a good year of planning and testing. Now we come out with new colors twice a year—spring and fall.”

Two of those new colors are flying off Hoopla’s shelves. “Neutrals and nudes are huge right now—hence our two new additions,” says Maxwell. “Nude Mood—pictured on the left—is a gorgeous neutral that can go from day to night. The perfect hue for every occasion. And Always Blushing(pictured on the right) is a smooth neutral with a hint of pale pink. Beautiful enough to wear all day, every day!”

Even better? Hoopla’s product line is green-friendly. “Because it doesn’t have the chemicals, we can recycle the bottles—which you can’t do with other bottles,” says Thornberry.  “Also, most nail polish is a standard size. I have never met a person who has used an entire bottle of nail polish from start to finish. So we created a smaller size—to reduce waste. We call it pocket polish—you can carry it in your pocket. Or keep it handy for touch-ups.” “And it’s perfect for travel,” adds Maxwell.

Their mini-bottles of polish are conveniently priced at $10. “Every once and awhile we ‘retire’ colors and those bottles are only $5,” says Maxwell. “We’ve only had one color—Calypso—back by popular demand. It’s fuschia.” Swing by either of Hoopla’s upscale salons, located in Fairway and Overland Park. A new third location is poised to open in Leawood around the first of the year. Massages, waxes, spray tans and various esthetic treatments are also available.
