A beloved Kansas City barbecue joint will close its doors on August 14, as Plowboys Barbecue’s four founders look to retire from restaurant life.

Over the last decade, Plowboys Barbecue expanded from its original Blue Springs location to open locations in the Power & Light District, Overland Park (which closed in December 2021), and Lincoln, Nebraska.

Plowboys also spent five years as the exclusive barbecue of the Chiefs at Arrowhead, prepared 35,000 meals in with Operation BBQ during the pandemic, and cofounder Todd Johns was named grand champion at the American Royal World Series of Barbecue.

As the restaurants shutter operations, Plowboys Barbecue will stick around with retail operations under the brand Plowboys Foods, a line of Plowboys sauces and rubs that can be purchased through atbbq.com.

Rubs include Bovine Bold, Fin & Feather, The Jerk, and the Yardbird Rub that has been honored by Good Housekeeping and sold in over 30 countries. Sauces include KC Crossroads, Bovine Bold, Sweet 180, En Fuego, Hothead, and Tarheel Tang.
